The Doug Journals
Curated collections of my finest works creatively compiled and laid out in magazine format.
As a gift for my 26th birthday this past winter, Tiffany set to work on an idea she’s had for a while: get my writing printed out into a magazine. Get the words I’d labored over out of the digital world and let them breathe the fresh air of our physical one. She used a couple of my old Surfer’s Journals for inspiration and managed to find a software that would allow for such an extensive project, then pushed through the trial and error of doing something for the first time until she had a solid draft ready in time for my birthday. She called it “The Surfer’s Journal, Doug Edition.”
I was floored at the attention to detail and amount of care that was invested into the whole thing—without a doubt the best birthday gift I’ve ever received. Eventually, the light bulb went off that this is an incredibly compelling way to showcase everything I’ve written, so then I set to work on my own version. I undertook the same steep learning curve she did, and eventually got comfortable enough with the tools that I was able to patch together some of my favorite pieces, a couple brand new and a few quite old, into the Doug Journal 2.0.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, and that it sparks the same DIY inspiration in you that it took to create them. As always, feedback is appreciated, so don’t be afraid to shoot me an email.
Cheers,
LG
